Home Shanti Review: If you have seen ‘Gullak’ web series then you will not get newness in ‘Home Shanti’

Most of the web series producers create a world in which the middle class is almost ignored, whereas in the beginning of television in India, serials like Hum Log, Buniyaad or Nukkad, the middle and lower middle class used to be the hero of the story. With the success of some web series, the producer directors have made a belief that profanity, obscenity, violence and degradation of morality is the formula for the success of their web series. These assumptions try to break some web series in between. Amazon Prime’s Panchayat or Lakhon Mein Ek, Kota Factory on Netflix have been seen rebelling against the set formula of success. The specialty of most of TVF’s television or web programs is that they stick only to the stories of the middle class and serve content without abuse, violence and obscenity to crores of viewers. Three seasons of ‘Gullak’, the story of a middle-class family in a small town, have come on Sony Liv. Inspired by this, Disney + Hotstar has also made an effort by presenting a 6 episode series “Home Shanti”. If you are troubled by the ridiculous and non-family content of OTT, then Home Shanti is a cool breeze, it should be seen immediately.

Home Shanti is a small family in which father Manoj Pahwa is an unemployed poet, mother Supriya Pathak is a teacher, daughter Chakori Dwivedi studies in college and son Poojan Chhabra is still studying in school. Despite facing the tragedies of the middle class, this family wants to build a house on the plot they have bought. There are no architects in a small town, there is a contractor who is known to one or the other relative, there is also a priest who conducts the puja etc., there is an astrologer who is a relative of a friend and the architect of the house. Let’s set. Sometimes an architect also comes who specializes in building air forts instead of houses. Similarly, the exercise of building a house begins among some other characters and then all the members of the house, using their intelligence, either help in the work of building a house or want to run away from this responsibility. In Home Shanti, each and every episode has been created from such sweet and sour incidents. If you are a resident of a small town and have ever seen your parents trying to build a house on a plot, then you will be able to relate to each and every scene of this series. There are very lovely and sweet incidents. In the summer days, the ice cream which was made by churning milk and bringing salt nuggets from the grocer and ice cubes from the nook had a different taste. This is the same ice cream.

Manoj Pahwa with his huge body and liquid face is the real image of a middle class man who gets happy from small things. If he likes cricket then nothing is more important than watching the match on mobile. He has the pride of considering himself a poet and therefore he considers his half incomplete tired poems as literature. Although a poem written by him has been used in every episode, which is poignant. College going daughter Chakor Dwivedi is wonderful. He is unhappy with the smallness of his city but he also knows the importance of his city. Girls in these cities grow up quickly and are burdened with responsibilities. Younger brother Poojan Chhabra is mother’s darling and his every small and big wish is fulfilled, due to which the sister gets irritated with him but also loves him a lot. The best character is played by Supriya Pathak whose dream is to build this house. He is a teacher. He also has respect in the city. She runs the house. The traditional habit of making the daughter responsible does not go away and the son does not have time to be pampered. In spite of all this, to fulfill the dream of her home, she makes her husband, daughter and sometimes even son go to the broom.

The makers of the series have the same team which gave middle class flavor to most of the TVF web series and hence Home Shanti never deviates from its mandate. After assistant directing Phillauri and Sachin A Billion Dreams and successfully directing web series like Bisht Please and Mr & Mrs, Home Shanti marks a major milestone in director Akanksha Dua’s fledgling career. He has done his job well. Apart from her TVF co-star Nidhi Bisht, Akanksha has written the series along with the team of Akshay Asthana, Saurabh Khanna (Kota Factory, Yeh Meri Family, Hostel Days), Mayank Pandey and Nikhil Sachan. Playback singer Shashwat Singh has given the music of Home Shanti which reminds one of the small town. Some other things are noteworthy in this web series like the selection of clothes of the characters. The brands of these cities are also different, which are partly influenced by Mumbai’s fashion and partly by films. Special attention has been given to the decoration of the houses. How the dining table of the middle class is sometimes useful for studies and sometimes for writing. In the new house, the daughter wants a separate bathroom for herself, while the son wants a gym. Parents want to make a study so that they can invite relatives and sit there and conduct satsang. Such pleasant and grounded thinking is rarely seen nowadays.

‘Home Shanti’ is a lovely web series. There are short episodes. There are no big conflicts. No profanity or vulgarity. There is love, there is breakup and in the midst of brother-sister duets, there are parental rites as well. When jaggery is made out of sugarcane juice, then it is customary to eat fresh jaggery with gram. Home Serenity is exactly that. This is Sattu, or Bael syrup in summer. ‘Home Shanti’ is Rooh-Afza. The only fear is that this type of web series has come late on Disney + Hotstar and there is no guarantee of success of stories made on the middle class. Watch with family, you will enjoy a lot, only this thing can be guaranteed.
